June’s fitness spotlight is Pilates in the Park. If you want a workout that is outdoors this summer, look no further than Pilates in the Park, led by Lynette Pettinicchi, a mat Pilates-certified instructor. The series takes place in Astoria Park every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 pm.
Lynette’s goal with her certification was to be able to host pop-ups wherever she was. As someone who works in an office all day, she knew how frustrating it was to go right from the office to an indoor workout on a beautiful summer day. She wanted to do something other than run while still being able to enjoy the sunshine and warm weather every summer. With that in mind, she figured others felt the same and wanted to offer a local option for Astoria residents and that is how she came up with the idea for Pilates in the Park. The Pilates in the Park series launched last year and was a hit, so it has been expanded to two nights a week this year.
Her classes cater to everyone, at all levels, even those who have never taken a Pilates class before.
Pilates focuses on strengthening, stretching and balancing by utilizing six guiding principles: centering, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow. Strengthening the core can improve posture, reduce lower back pain, assist with better balance and stability, reduce risk of injury, increase flexibility, and improve sex life and more.
Pilates in the Park meets by the Astoria Park bathroom at 7 pm. They then walk over to the space overlooking the pool together at about 7:05 pm. Each session is $10 prepaid; $15 for walk-ins. Mat rentals are $2.
