From A Bronx Tale which was filmed here, to Project Bronx, Astoria has been host to some flattering and productive insights on our bro-borough, the Bronx. In this issue’s local spotlight feature we talked to June Baby Productions (JBP), who produced Project Bronx. You may know them for their Kotex ad campaign, their TED X Talk, their feature in the Daily News, or maybe just from the neighborhood. Meet Sara Waber and Katherine Lazo, two sharp Astoria gals who have started their own quiet empire.

QS: What’s the story behind JBP?

Sara: Kat and I have known each other since elementary school. After attending college, where the injustices of how women were portrayed in media (films, advertisements, etc.) became more and more obvious to us, we wanted to create our own media platform that represented women the way they should be. We created the production company, June Baby Productions, in June, 2012, not only to focus on the female voice, but as a way to change the types of media people are consuming. We take on a variety of projects, from shooting music videos to filming feminist events. As two females behind the camera and editing station, we are proud to represent women in the production industry.

QS: What do you think has contributed to the success and support you guys receive?

Kat: I believe our love for telling stories and commitment to producing quality video content are the reasons for our success. Success is also very arbitrary. I believe success is measured by the amount of people we positively impact with our work, whether it be clients or viewers.

QS:What’s next for JBP?

Kat: Our next big step is producing our own narratives. Sara and I have experienced first-hand how women are discriminated against in the film industry – our stories aren’t told or we’re misrepresented. We want to be the change we want to see – that’s the reason why we started JBP in the first place. DEETS – a web series encapsulating every detail of HER story, will be our very first every self-produced narrative.

Sara: Something else that we’re super thrilled to start is a documentary, Dream, Girl, about women start-ups. We’re collaborating with Erin Bagwell from Feminist Wednesday. We’re all about the girl power!! If you want to keep up to date on that project you can check out: www.feministwednesday.com/dreamgirl/. Photo Courtesy JBP
