DIY Halloween Costumes

How will you stand out this Halloween? Of course, it all depends on the amount of time, cash and dedication you sacrifice for creating a costume. For those of you more likely to wait until the last minute, or simply take it easy with your Halloween look, read the following for some tips.

You have the option of “thrifting” to find special pieces for a more authentic look and feel to your costume. Many thriftshops have a costume section. Something unique may catch your eye and inspire a classic costume, or somehting never before seen with human eyes. Think back to icons of the past (or even present) when you look through the racks. Interested in a mod look? There’s bound to be a short dress and boots you’d probably only wear once. Groovy printed shirts and pants are always to be found.

For those of you who like to leave your ideas for the last minute, consider a few of these tricks. You can wear a simple dress and heels, preferably an outfit you’d normally wear for work, but for a creepy touch, glue plastic bugs to your tights up and around your leg. The more realisticlooking the plastic bugs, the better! The same goes for the gents working office jobs. Your uniform can be spruced up with a few gory additions

like the aforementioned bugs, or fake blood. You can also wear a full face of makeup with inchlong eyelashes and lipstick in UN-natural colors.

A simple hairdo for yourself or your child can be enhanced by hair glitter or colored hairspray. Consider braiding your hair for more intricacy (and a better hold) in order to pin plastic

spiders for a funky look!

There’s a lot you can do with a spray can, especially for those of us who would rather dress up on a budget, but still stand out. Glue plastic snakes to a headband and spray-paint it all gold for a homemade crown fit for Medusa. The same goes for a head-wreath made from fake leaves and wire, also perfect for an Ancient Greek or Roman ensemble.

For kids you can cut up an old, baggy T-shirt of yours to create a Jedi or Hogwarts robe with just a few stitches. Just as simple, fishnet stockings or a hairnet can be worn on your face, or your arms and legs, apply makeup over the material so that you can create the look of scaly skin, either for a mermaid or something much slimier.

There’s always the option of dressing up as your favorite artist. Interested in channeling your inner Frida Kahlo? All you need are fake flowers and an eyebrow pencil to create a crown of flowers and the characteristic uni-brow. A statement necklace and earrings, as well as a colorful shawl should finish off the look. If you happen to share a likeness with Salvador Dalí, consider drawing a mustache on yourself.

Think creatively this holiday. Often times a unique look can be made from the simplest of objects!
