Amazon Plans To Contribute As A New Neighbor

Since this is the Queens Scene’s real estate issue, we thought we would share with you a mailer all of us received in LIC and Astoria from Amazon introducing themselves and highlighting what they plan to “deliver” as Amazon HQ2 neighbors. Amazon makes some important promises to the community, such as “25,000 new jobs over 10 years, of different educational levels” hiring people from all five boroughs of the city. They also plan on career training for local residents, “technology and training programs to help underrepresented communities be better equipped for Amazon and other employment opportunities, including internships and work-based learning,” they said. Amazon noted the anticipated presence of HQ2 would create tens of thousands of indirect jobs in construction, building services, and hospitality. Also according to the mailer, “More than half of the items sold in the Amazon store are from small and medium-sized businesses, and Amazon Web Services is helping hundreds of thousands of startups launch… their businesses quickly and with minimal cost. In addition, the 25,000 new Amazon employees working in Long Island City will frequent small businesses, helping them grow and hire.”
