Secret Theatre Upcoming Events

The Secret Theatre provides top-quality drama at a theater near you! You don’t even have to save up for it. Grown-up drama and children’s fare are both happening at the not-so Secret Theatre (44-02 23rd Street, LIC). Founded in 2007 by actor/director/writer Richard Mazda, the Secret Theatre is an Off-Off-Broadway, 99-seat theater, concert hall and drama school (in The Long Island City Art Center).

“Columbinus” (through May 13, catch it!) We’ll let the theater’s artistic director, Richard Mazda, describe it:

“I want to write a kind of love letter to this play and specifically this production…I told the cast on Saturday night that as an ensemble they were the best cast I had seen at the Secret—not a single weak moment in the entire play. They all performed with the degree of focus that such an important piece of theater deserves.

“Surprisingly there are humorous moments specifically in the well-realized portraits of typical high schoolers and their behaviors and, in point of fact, a whole range of emotions is on display in this incredibly well-written and executed play.”

Making the denouement all the more poignant, we would venture.

“There will be plenty of frothy musicals to come, but sometimes high art requires us to think and follow themes that are not sprinkled with pixie dust, but rather are coated in the patina of history. The rewards are worth the challenging material.”

Portions of sales will be donated to Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. Donations will also be collected at the theatre.

Tickets are $18, less for college ($15) and high school students ($12).

“The Exonerated” (May 31 - June 9)

A play based on prisoners on death row who were cleared by DNA evidence. “The Exonerated,” is a riveting piece based on the actual stories of death row prisoners whose innocence was proved using the DNA technology that developed while these poor innocents languished believing the world had thrown them aside and that they were marked for death.

Broadway performer and director, DeMone Seraphin, “has assembled a great cast and judging by what I am hearing in the rehearsal room this is going to be another great production,” commented Mazda.

Tickets are $18 online, $15 for high school and college students.

Kids Musicals Every Month For ages 3-103! Both are comedic with audience participation, jokes, and songs. ($10 kids, $15 adults, $40 family 4- pack).
