Gyro World

Gyro World proudly opens its third location in Queens! The doors of its newest location on 30th Avenue opened on October 28, though an official Grand Opening is slated for April 12th when small tasting plates will be available, allowing you to sample their excellent, authentic Greek cuisine, while raising money for charity. At the Grand Opening, all proceeds from their low-priced dishes will go to Ronald Mc- Donald House.

Founder and father, Dimitri Petridis, opened the first Gyro World on Northern Blvd in Bayside in 2005 and the second location in Ridgewood in 2015, with the help of his two savvy sons, Thanasi, and Kosta, who runs the new location. This casual, comfortable restaurant offers seating for up to 60 people in its clean dining room outfitted with leather banquettes and tables overlooking the bustle of 30th Avenue. Sidewalk seating will commence in May when warm weather (hopefully) arrives. When asked “Why Astoria?”, Kosta responded, “We want to bring authentic, traditional Greek cuisine to Astoria,” New York’s home of Greek immigration and culture.

Gyro World is much more than gyro, and is not a typical take-out joint. The quality of the ingredients, the on-the-spot preparation, the beautiful presentation, and the friendly service delivered by lovely Stephanie and the crew, all add up to a very pleasant meal when dining in and for taking out too. We started with some warm pita bread slathered with house-made tzatziki sauce and spicy tirokafteri cheese dip. Next came an enormous shepherd salad called horiatiki, loaded with sweet, crunchy cucumbers and tomatoes topped with stuffed grape leaves and a healthy slab of creamy, imported feta cheese, sprinkled with Greek oregano. Other starters include crispy rings of fried calamari, spinach pie, and a unique slab of thick cut, Greek style bacon called pansetta, grilled to a sizzling finish ($9.75). Gyro World offers beer and wine with domestic and Greek beers: Fix Hellas and Mythos. I loved the mini carafes of Greek white and red wine, which perfectly complemented the cuisine.

Gyro World is ideally suited to handle groups of 4 or more for lunch or dinner. Their “GW Plate” is the perfect introduction to Gyro World’s fine cooking. A huge platter of their famous grilled meats includes gyro, Greek Gyro (pork), bifteki, chicken bifteki, pork souvlaki, chicken souvlaki, and country sausage called loukaniko. The small size feeds 3-4 hungry diners while the large is a feast for 5-6. There’s plenty of warm pita bread to soak up the savory juices from these meats. On your next trip you can zero in on your favorite entrée. Check out photos of this eye-popping platter on Facebook, where it got half a million views!

I was very impressed with the tenderness and juiciness of Gyro World’s grilled chicken breast, perfectly seasoned and cooked, then served on a clever wooden platter. The house favorite, and mine too, is chicken bifteki, a type of chicken burger made from freshly ground chicken breast mixed with a nice blend of herbs and seasonings. The gyro is made from a unique family recipe that has led to Gyro World’s success, along with skewered pork souvlaki and beef bifteki, Greek style hamburgers. So dive in.

For lunch, try a Caesar wrap with grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato, onion, parmigiano, and Caesar dressing, or the vegetarian with roasted veggies and haloumi cheese. Burgers, soups and salads round out the menu and of course, everything is available for fast, free delivery to your home or office via their own website. Gyro World has catered some of the city’s most prestigious organizations including the United Nations and various consulates and corporations.

Sweeten it up with their homemade chocolate and vanilla confection called kormos, made with crushed biscuits and chocolate, rice pudding, and classic baklava.
