Follow your nose to fabulous cakes, cupcakes, pastries, pies, muffins, macarons, and coffee drinks of all kinds, served in a super relaxed environment. The décor is both rustic and modern featuring wood beam ceilings and plank floors. On a recent, unusually warm evening, the outdoor tables at Martha’s Country Bakery on Ditmars Blvd. were full of people sipping, slicing, and scooping into steaming coffee drinks and teas, sour cream apple pie, banana pudding, gelato, and their newest confection called “Blackout Pie in a Cup”. This dessert is illegal in three states and is a deconstructed treat where the pie crust is crushed into a cup and mixed with crushed Nilla wafers and the richest dark chocolate pudding. Dig in with a spoon and scoop out this heavenly confection with glee.

It’s fair to say that owner/baker George Stertsios is obsessed with quality and consistency and incorporates only the finest ingredients in all the items at Martha’s Country Bakery. George and partner Tony Zannikos use real butter, vanilla, chocolate, and fresh fruit in their decadent creations. You can taste it in every delicious bite of their cakes, 18 varieties of cupcakes, pies, macarons and puddings.

Barbara, the friendly, helpful manager, is often in the bakery and will happily recommend some of her favorites if you’re simply overwhelmed with the amount of choices. Starting with pies, there’s apple crumb, sour cream apple crumb, pumpkin, triple berry, Mississippi mud pie, and cherry pie, to name a few. Moving on to mile-high layer cakes, how about triple chocolate, Oreo, strawberry banana, red velvet, chocolate fudge, and carrot cake with a touch of sweet coconut to end your holiday meal or any special occasion.

Martha’s Country Bakery even offers traditional Greek and Italian specialties such as ekmek custard and phyllo pastry, and crunchy cannolis filled with sweetened ricotta and chocolate chips. Delicate cups of mousse line the illuminated case, filled with hazelnut mousse, passionfruit, coconut, and their nostalgic banana pudding, which will transport you to simpler, better times.

This is New York, so let’s tawk about cheesecake! I’m talking Oreo cheesecake, peanut butter cheesecake, apple crunch cheesecake, brownie cheesecake, marble cheesecake, white chocolate raspberry cheesecake, and squares of cheesecake bars such as salted caramel, key lime pie and pecan caramel bars.
