Clement Clarke Moore was an American professor of Oriental and Greek literature at Columbia College, now Columbia University. He is generally considered to be the author of the Yuletide iconic poem, “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” which later became famous as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

Christmas Caroling Began in Queens!

Famous 19th century photojournalist and social reformer, Jacob Riis, helped introduce Christmas caroling to America. The Danish-born Riis, had moved to the village of Richmond Hill, Long Island (now Queens), with his Danish-born wife, Elisabeth. They took up residence in a white, clapboard house at 84-47 120th Street from 1885 to 1912, nearly 30 years.
